Shoulder season
HVAC shoulder season checklist (Southeast)
When the heat index drops, shops that only know how to buy cold no-cool clicks watch payroll eat the week. This is the owner checklist I use before anyone talks about “needing more leads.”
I grew an electric and HVAC shop with my own marketing spend. Real tests, not theory. How Lead Junkie got built.
Shoulder season is a systems test, not a vibe
I’m Joey Donohue. I spent $750k of my own money learning marketing while growing an HVAC and electric shop from $2.1M to $7M. Summers hide sloppy follow-up. Shoulder season doesn’t.
Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana — when emergency volume softens, memberships, tune-ups, and the list you already paid for keep trucks from sitting. Regional context: Southeast HVAC marketing.
Checklist before you buy another cold lead
Run this in order. If a line fails, fix it before you raise Meta or Google budgets.
- Count empty-truck half-days last month — that’s the real problem statement (empty trucks HVAC marketing)
- Pull the list: past customers, dead estimates, lapsed members — can you reach them permissioned?
- Membership offer you can actually fulfill (slots, filters, price you say out loud) — membership marketing
- Reactivation script + owner/CSR who owns the dialer or inbox — reactivation campaigns
- Email/SMS that is a conversation, not a blast spam folder — email · SMS
- Missed-call text-back still on when volume is quieter — leaks don’t take a holiday (missed-call text-back)
- Creative matches the season (tune-up / plan), not July no-cool — seasonal ad creative
- Scoreboard = booked jobs and membership starts, not “leads generated”
What to pause vs what to keep
You don’t have to delete Google structure because April isn’t July. You do have to stop pretending every cold click is a no-cool. Often the right move is lower cold spend and higher list work — not “pause everything and hope.”
Shoulder pattern (owner view — not a law)
| Motion | Usually keep | Usually fix/raise first |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency Search / LSA | Structure + negatives | Staffing honesty if volume falls |
| Cold Meta lead forms | Only if follow-up is fast | List reactivation + membership offer |
| SEO maintenance pages | Compounding pages | Internal links from service hubs |
| GBP / reviews | Steady replies | Joseph-approved posts only |
One week plan (no fake benchmarks)
Day 1–2: empty-truck count + list export. Day 3: membership offer written in plain English. Day 4–5: reactivation touches (phone/SMS/email) with a human owner. Day 6: refresh one shoulder creative from a real job video. Day 7: review booked memberships and tune-ups — then decide if cold ads deserve more money.

FAQ
- Should I pause Google Ads in shoulder season?
- Not automatically. Rebalance toward jobs you can fulfill — memberships and reactivation often deserve budget before more cold forms.
- What’s the first checklist item if trucks are empty?
- Count the empty half-days, then work the list you already paid for before buying strangers.
- Do I need new creative for shoulder season?
- Yes if you’re still running peak-summer no-cool clips. Match the offer to tune-ups and plans.
- Will Lead Junkie invent shoulder-season CPL targets?
- No. We use your booked-job math — not a blog table of fake benchmarks.
